Gary Horton, a pro scout for ESPN's Scouts Inc., writes a piece on the five best fits for free-agent receiver Vincent Jackson. He puts the Patriots at the No. 3 spot.
"The missing link in this dynamic pass offense is the ability to stretch the field with more vertical passing plays," Horton writes. "The last explosive receiver in New England was Randy Moss, and Tom Brady really misses that component. Players with character question marks seem to adjust to the 'Patriot Way' quickly and off-field issues shouldn't be a big concern for Bill Belichick."
Jackson would be a great addition to most teams. But one concern for the Patriots in a situation like this is financial.
If they pay Wes Welker a top-of-the-line deal, or even the $9.4 million franchise tag, and then do the same for Jackson, it's potentially eating up about 18-20 percent of the salary cap on two players at the same position.
