Free-agent tight end Daniel Fells is scheduled for a Monday visit with the Patriots, a league source confirms.

This is a move that was projected last week, and it has a potential trickle-down effect of Aaron Hernandez playing more of a wide receiver role at times.

The Patriots went through the 2011 season with two tight ends (Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez), leaving themselves vulnerable in the event of injury. That showed up in Super Bowl XLVI, and also earlier in the season when Hernandez was out of the lineup and the offense shifted to a three-receiver attack and Chad Ochocinco couldn't deliver.

Fells (6-4, 252), who visited with the team in 2010 before re-signing with the Rams, would provide insurance behind both Gronkowski and Hernandez.

Look for a deal to possibly get done as early as Monday, assuming there are no unexpected turns in the process.

Fells' visit was first reported by Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald.
