Now that compensatory draft choices have been awarded by the NFL, the exact spots of each Patriots draft pick is known. Prior to last week, only the spots in the first, second and third round were solidified.
1a. 27th overall
1b. 31st overall
2a. 48th overall
2b. 62nd overall
3. 93rd overall
4. 126th overall
Over the next six days, a look at some of the recent players picked in those spots will be highlighted, starting today at 126.
2011: RB Bilal Powell (Jets)
2010: S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (Cowboys)
2009: LB Slade Norris (Raiders)
2008: WR Lavelle Hawkins (Titans)
2007: S Dashon Goldson (49ers)
2006: DE Elvis Dumervil (Broncos)
2005: T Todd Herremans (Eagles)
ANALYSIS: Assuming the Patriots keep the pick -- which is a big "if" given Bill Belichick's willingness to wheel and deal -- this shows that solid value can be found at this point in the draft. The big name that jumps out is Dumervil, one of the AFC's top pass rushers, and the Patriots would certainly be thrilled if they were able to pick up a player of his caliber at this point in the draft. Goldson (2007) and Herremans (2005) have both been solid starters for the teams that selected them, while the more recent selections have been less successful. Hawkins had a slow start in Tennessee before a breakout season in 2011 (47 catches). More recently, Norris and Owusu-Ansah haven't panned out, while Powell has yet to emerge in New York.
