Now that compensatory draft choices have been awarded by the NFL, the exact spots of each Patriots draft pick is known. Prior to last week, only the spots in the first, second and third round were solidified.
1a. 27th overall
1b. 31st overall
2a. 48th overall
2b. 62nd overall
3. 93rd overall
4. 126th overall
Over the next six days, a look at some of the recent players picked in those spots will be highlighted, continuing today at 93.
2011: S Chris Conte (Bears)
2010: TE Tony Moeaki (Chiefs)
2009: DT Corvey Irvin (Panthers)
2008: LB Philip Wheeler (Colts)
2007: RB Garrett Wolfe (Bears)
2006: TE Dominique Byrd (Rams)
2005: T Trai Essex (Steelers)
ANALYSIS: Assuming the Patriots keep the pick -- which is a big "if" given Bill Belichick's willingness to wheel and deal -- this shows that this may be a hit-or-miss position for the team. The Patriots have historically struggled drafting in the third round under Belichick, who once described the round as often being populated with talented players with injury (WR Brandon Tate, 2009) or character (QB Ryan Mallett, 2011) red flags coming out of school. Moeaki (2010) had a solid season for the Chiefs in 2010 before missing his 2011 campaign due to injury. Wheeler (2008) stuck in the Colts' defense through 2011, while Essex (2005) has been a reserve option for the Steelers in recent years. Byrd, Wolfe, and Irvin have been misses.
