The signing of linebacker Bobby Carpenter is consistent with the Patriots' approach this offseason. It adds another layer of competition to the roster as the team attempts to build quality depth from top to bottom.
Projecting where Carpenter fits is a bit tricky.
He has played outside linebacker and inside linebacker in the 3-4 in Dallas/Miami, and was a strongside linebacker in the 4-3 in Detroit. He runs well to factor into the special teams mix as well, and also has had some success covering tight ends.
One of the knocks on Carpenter has been physicality. With 10 starts over his career, it's hard to imagine him becoming a big piece in the Patriots' defense, but he could factor in the mix for a situational-type role.
