A feel for the 48th draft pick

April, 6, 2012
Now that compensatory draft choices have been awarded by the NFL, the exact spots of each Patriots draft pick is known. Prior to last week, only the spots in the first, second and third round were solidified.

1a. 27th overall
1b. 31st overall
2a. 48th overall
2b. 62nd overall
3. 93rd overall
4. 126th overall

Beginning Tuesday, a look at some of the recent players picked in those spots is being highlighted, continuing today at 48.

2011: C Stefen Wisniewski (Raiders)
2010: QB Jimmy Clausen (Panthers)
2009: S Darcel McBath (Broncos)
2008: TE Fred Davis (Redskins)
2007: LB Justin Durant (Jaguars)
2006: CB Cedric Griffin (Vikings)
2005: LB Odell Thurman (Bengals)

ANALYSIS: Assuming the Patriots keep the pick -- which is a big "if" given Bill Belichick's willingness to wheel and deal -- this is a spot that hasn't seen any big hits in recent years. Durant, Davis, and Griffin have all been productive NFL players, while Thurman, McBath, and Clausen have been on the negative end of the spectrum. In particular, McBath is worthy of attention, given that the Patriots may be looking for a safety with one of their second round picks. The Patriots have had some relative hits (Patrick Chung, James Sanders) and misses (Brandon Meriweather, Guss Scott, Dexter Reid) drafting at the position.
