Reinforcing good hit with Mayo

4/11/2012

Today's reported trade that sends Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers to the Giants for a 2012 fifth-round draft choice reinforces the Patriots' hit with Jerod Mayo in the 2008 draft.

Rivers was the ninth pick in that same '08 draft. Mayo was selected 10th.

Rivers, as detailed by Mike Garofolo of the Newark Star-Ledger, has had a tough time staying on the field consistently over his first four seasons. Some of it simply looks like bad luck.

As for the Patriots, their 2008 draft has taken its fair share of hits. And rightfully so.

Outside of Mayo and Pro Bowl special teamer Matthew Slater, the Patriots have nothing to show for their '08 draft, with early-round misses on cornerback Terrence Wheatley (second round), outside linebacker Shawn Crable (third round), quarterback Kevin O'Connell (third round).

No one is saying it was Bill Belichick's best work.

But in terms of nailing a top 10 pick, which some assume is a given despite annual reminders it isn't, Mayo was a good hit.

Today's Rivers trade reinforces that line of thinking.
