FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Before we shut off the lights at the Gillette Stadium press box for Thursday night, taking a look back at the first round and looking forward to the second and third rounds on Friday night:
Chandler Jones the pick at 21. The Patriots made their first trade-up of the night by acquiring the 21st overall pick from Cincinnati in exchange for the 27th overall (first round) and 93rd overall (third round) selections. Jones is a 6-foot-5, 266-pound defensive end from Syracuse.
Dont'a Hightower the pick at 25. On their second trade-up of the night, the Patriots moved into the 25th overall spot and selected 6-foot-2, 265-pound Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower. The Patriots shipped their original first-round (31st overall) and fourth-round (126th overall) selections to the Broncos to make the deal.
Looking ahead to Day 2. The Patriots enter the second day of the NFL Draft holding the 48th and 62nd overall selections, both second round picks. After that, the team does not have any picks remaining in this year's draft, through seven rounds. If that remains the case, the Patriots will not draft on Saturday (rounds 4-7). That, of course, could change if the Patriots decide to pull more trades.
ESPNBoston.com will have more analysis of the first round throughout the day on Friday, followed by the second and third rounds beginning at 7 p.m.
