Iowa tight end Brad Herman has agreed to terms on a free-agent contract with the Patriots, a league source confirms.
The 6-foot-4, 252-pound Herman is known for his athleticism (36-inch vertical leap), although he wasn't a big factor as a pass-catcher (17 receptions over the last two seasons). The 2012 Pro Football Weekly draft preview projects him as a "move" tight end, which is the Aaron Hernandez-type role in the Patriots' offense.
The Patriots have Rob Gronkowski, Hernandez and Daniel Fells atop the tight end depth chart, so Herman faces longer odds to earn a roster spot. But with Gronkowski coming back from ankle surgery, Herman could have an opportunity for extended practice time and a chance to show what he can do to potentially land on the practice squad.
Christopher Price of WEEI first reported Herman's agreement with the Patriots.
