Two leftover soundbites from Matt Light's interview with Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio's "The Herd" (listen here):

On Wes Welker's contract negotiations with the team. "The position he's in right now, he's got a deal that he wants. Now, it's not the best deal, but you're talking about a guaranteed lump of money [$9.5 million], not long-term, that he can bank on for his future. Given that, I would say that I think it would be in the back of his mind, and I'm sure it's in the organization's mind, that you buy time doing what they've done so far to get a long-term deal in place. Because you can't look at a guy like Wes Welker and not think 'This is the guy that you want in your franchise, on your team, playing with your quarterback and the rest of the guys in that locker room.' It's because of everything he's done. It's obvious, right? But those things are so complicated. It's never cut and dried. It's never what you think. Even going through, and thinking that I was an agent and I could handle it myself at one point, it was like 'pump the brakes, that's not my specialty, I'm not going to go that route.' I'm speaking of last season, the lockout, not having a contract in place, and going through that entire ordeal -- it's very complicated. Being that organization and how they look at things, it is a business. But it's a family business."

On how much longer Tom Brady might play. "Until they tell him to go home. I think he said that publicly. There are people that are cut in a certain way, and having the opportunity to play with a guy like [Drew] Brees in college [at Purdue], and then being around Tommy ... these quarterbacks are cut from the same cloth. They compete in everything they do. It's in their DNA. It's who they are. It's what they're made of. Until somebody says to them, 'Hey, look, we don't want you', they're not going to go away."
