Welker update on deadline day

Monday at 4 p.m. marks the deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign an extension with their team this year, and receiver Wes Welker's status was updated on Saturday in this news story on ESPNBoston.com.

At this point, all is quiet. As noted in the news story, a source close to Welker didn't expect an extension to be reached. The status of contract talks was described as not "overly active."

So things are trending toward the deadline passing and Welker playing on his one-year, $9.5 million contract.

But one thing to keep in mind is that the sides have negotiated an extension on and off since last season, so all it would take is one phone call and a shift in stance and things could come together quickly.
