Free-agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress is traveling from New Jersey to New England on Sunday to work out for the Patriots, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Burress, who turned 35 on Sunday, helped beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII with a game-winning touchdown catch for the New York Giants.

In September 2009, Burress was sentenced to two years in prison for violating gun laws in New York after shooting himself in the leg while at a nightclub. He pleaded guilty to a lesser firearms charge.

After missing the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Burress was released three months early for good behavior and then signed with the Jets last season. He tied for the team lead with eight touchdown receptions and finished with 612 yards and 45 receptions.

The 6-foot-5, 232-pound Burress played for the Steelers from 2000-2004 and the Giants from 2005-2008.

While the Patriots are already considered deep at receiver, the team could be working out Burress in order to keep their emergency lists of free agent players updated.
