Sharing some thoughts on the Patriots working out free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress on Sunday, as reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:
The first instinct was that the workout was likely for emergency list purposes.
But then you take a few minutes and consider a different viewpoint.
Maybe the Patriots still have some questions when it comes to their No. 3 receiver. Welker and Lloyd are the locks, but after that, it's not as if anyone has clearly distinguished himself. With a 90-man roster limit, there is some flexibility to throw a player like Burress into the mix and see how he looks in that competition. He'd certainly help in the red zone.
Then there's the overall depth issue at receiver.
Branch has been limited in recent practices and didn't play in Thursday's preseason opener. Developmental receiver Britt Davis was injured Thursday night, further thinning the numbers.
So one could make a case that Burress would help the depth situation right now. It wouldn't be shocking if the team signed him.
Bill Belichick is always tweaking the roster and the possibility of adding Burress comes out of nowhere.
Whether it's emergency list or a legit possibility, it's fascinating nonetheless.
Never dull covering these Patriots.
