When the Patriots visit the Titans in the season opener Sept. 9, one storyline that figures to garner attention is the presence of identical twins Devin McCourty (Patriots cornerback) and Jason McCourty (Titans cornerback) on opposite sidelines.
McCourty's mother, Phyllis, apparently has a half-Patriot/half-Titan jersey that might best capture the unique moment.
The McCourty brothers are tight, so when Jason McCourty landed a lucrative contract extension from the Titans last week, the news was well received in New England.
"I'm trying to see how many new toys he can buy me with all that new money," Devin cracked on Sunday.
The deal, as reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, is a five-year extension with $20 million in bonuses/guarantees (link here).
It was easy for Devin, who was born 27 minutes before Jason, to share in the joy of the accomplishment.
"To watch your little brother come in as a sixth-round pick and establish himself in the NFL, you feel like it's your dream come true as well," Devin said. "Entering the league, his biggest worry was trying to make sure he got to his next contract. To make it to the next contract, and make it that big, I think it really [speaks] volumes on how hard he's worked."
As for how both play the game, there are similarities.
"I know a lot of times when people watch us on film, they say we have a lot of the same body mechanics -- how we run, how we move on the field," Devin said. "Not always getting to watch a lot of him [in the NFL], just a couple times, but I'd say we're similar in the way we play."
The two are the 11th set of twins to play in the NFL.
