The Patriots have claimed former Boston College offensive lineman Matt Tennant (Saints) on waivers, a source confirms.
Tennant, who enters his third NFL season, has appeared in 28 regular-season games over the last two years (no starts). He was selected by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2010 draft.
At this time, he fills the open spot on the team's 53-man roster, as the Patriots trimmed down to 52 on Friday.
The Patriots might have been awarded another player(s) on waivers -- a source said they were eyeing the receiver spot -- which could lead to some more roster shuffling.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Tennant joins Dan Connolly, Ryan Wendell, Nick McDonald and Donald Thomas as those on the roster who have taken snaps at center this preseason.
Longtime center Dan Koppen, who had been with the team since 2003, was released Friday.
Greg A. Bedard of the Boston Globe first reported the Patriots' claiming of Tennant.
