Halftime thoughts from Pats-Titans

NASHVILLE -- The Patriots were in search of defensive difference-makers this offseason, and they received an early return on their significant investment.

First-round draft choice Chandler Jones had a second-quarter strip sack that was recovered by fellow first-rounder Dont'a Hightower, who returned it for a 6-yard touchdown, while second-round pick Tavon Wilson had an interception.

Could the Patriots, who lead 21-3 at the half, have asked for anything more from their rookies?

That is the main takeaway from this perspective when it comes to the first half of the Patriots' season opener against the Titans.

The defense was on its heels early -- giving up big yards on the Titans' opening drive before holding them to a field goal (looked a lot like 2011) while getting a break that cornerback Devin McCourty wasn't called for pass interference in the end zone.

While it looked like more of the same for the Patriots, it turned out to be a case of the D just getting its feet under itself.

Then came the rookie impact.

Offensively, the protection has held up well enough, save for a crunching sack of Tom Brady with Nate Solder beat by Kamerion Wimbley to end the third series. Brady received medical attention on the sideline afterward, specifically with his nose. He didn't miss any time.

Brady was terrific, his touchdown pass to Aaron Hernandez a result of his ability to slide in the pocket and keep the play alive.

The Patriots defended the run well, which was a top point of emphasis against Chris Johnson.

Overall, the Patriots look like the superior team.
