Positional groupings: Back to 3-WR

BALTIMORE -- A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots in their 31-30 loss to the Ravens:

3 WR/1 TE/1 RB -- 60 of 82
2 WR/2 TE/1 RB -- 17 of 82
1 WR/3 TE/1 RB -- 5 of 82

ANALYSIS: The Ravens matched the 1 WR/3 TE/1 RB package with their base defense. When the Patriots went to the 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB grouping, as well as the 2 WR/2 TE/1 RB grouping, the Ravens matched with the nickel. ... Overall, the groupings show that without TE Aaron Hernandez, the Patriots felt their best matchup was going three-wides, primarily with Brandon Lloyd, Julian Edelman and Wes Welker in the first half, and quickening the pace. ... In the 2 WR/2 TE/1 RB grouping, the Patriots rotated Julian Edelman and Wes Welker as the No. 2 receiver for the second week in a row.
