Tight end Kellen Winslow asked to be released by the Patriots and the team has obliged Thursday, according to a source.
Winslow signed a one-year contract with the Patriots on Sept. 19, the transaction coming after Aaron Hernandez sprained his ankle in a 20-18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 16. He played four snaps, and made one catch, in the Patriots' 31-30 loss to the Ravens on Sunday night.
With Hernandez apparently healing faster than expected -- he was spotted in the locker room Thursday walking without a limp -- Winslow's role on the team might have been affected in the coming weeks.
Hernandez was not spotted at the start of Thursday's practice.
