The Patriots worked out tight end Jake Byrne on Monday, according to a league source.
Byrne went undrafted this year out of Wisconsin, where he played in 51 games, starting 21. He finished his college career with six receptions for 57 yards and one touchdown.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder was signed by the New Orleans Saints on April 30, and spent training camp with the team before being waived on Aug. 27.
The Patriots are currently carrying four tight ends on their active roster, with Aaron Hernandez continuing to work his way back from a right ankle injury that has caused him to miss two straight games.
Byrne is practice-squad eligible, but the team currently has the maximum allowable limit of eight practice-squad players on its roster.
