FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Late in the 2011 season, the Patriots experimented with a platoon role for cornerback Devin McCourty, relocating him to safety and using him in that spot at times during games. McCourty was struggling at cornerback, and the team also had a need to beef up the safety group, which was dealing with injuries.

Once again the Patriots' secondary is experiencing some difficulties and injuries within the safety group, and McCourty was asked on Friday as to whether or not there is a chance he will be playing safety this Sunday against the visiting Jets.

"That's not my call, I'll do whatever Coach [Belichick] decides," McCourty said, before adding praise for his teammates at the position. "We've got some young guys that I think are doing a great job of picking up the defense since they've been here. I think they've done a great job just responding and give them opportunities to show what they know and how they can play."

As for whether or not McCourty is ready to play safety if the opportunity presents itself?

"On this team, you've got to be ready to go anywhere," he responded.

In recent weeks, one of the emerging issues that the secondary appears to have been dealing with is locating the football when it is within their vicinity. McCourty was asked whether there are times when better execution from he and his secondary mates boils down to just finding the football sooner, or if there were more factors involved.

"In some cases, it is that simple," he said. "In other cases it's different. I wouldn't lie and say no, in some cases it's going and [just] making a play."

McCourty and his teammates have turned the page from Sunday's tough loss in Seattle.

"I think we're anxious to get back on the field and just play," he said. "All the guys in this locker room just want to go play this weekend, and I think we're excited and anxious just to get back."
