McCourty earns special-teams honor

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 7, the team announced on Wednesday morning.

McCourty's effort was highlighted by a 104-yard first-quarter kickoff return for a touchdown that gave the Patriots their first points of the day, and first kickoff return for a score since the 2010 regular season.

The third-year cornerback did later fumble a return in the fourth quarter, but his team was able to hold on and earn a 29-26 overtime victory over the Jets.

McCourty has served as the primary kickoff return man for the Patriots this season, averaging 28.3 yards per return on 12 tries. Sunday's score was McCourty's first career kickoff return for a touchdown.
