The New England Patriots have released linebacker Bobby Carpenter, the team confirmed.

Carpenter, signed this offseason as a free agent, was released at the conclusion of the preseason and subsequently re-signed on Oct. 2. He played in four games for the team, primarily in a special-teams role, recording two tackles.

Originally a first-round pick for the Dallas Cowboys in 2006, Carpenter was one of the Patriots' 10 offseason award winners in 2012. The Patriots were his fourth NFL team after stints with both the Lions and Dolphins in addition to his time in Dallas.

Carpenter has career totals of 167 tackles, one fumble recovered and one interception.
Field Yates has previous experience interning with the New England Patriots on both their coaching and scouting staffs. A graduate of Wesleyan University (CT), he is a regular contributor to ESPN Boston's Patriots coverage and ESPN Insider.
