FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- With tight end Rob Gronkowski out with a broken forearm, the Patriots turned to top backup Michael Hoomanawanui in Sunday's win over the Texans. In Sunday's AFC Championship Game, veteran Daniel Fells also figures to be part of the mix.

Fells, who was a healthy scratch Sunday, showed up on the radar Wednesday as the Patriots announced he was one of their practice players of the week.

The practice players of the week are those who the coaching staff feels best prepared the team in the days leading up to a victory.

In addition to Fells, defensive back Derrick Martin, practice squad linebacker Jeff Tarpinian, receiver Kamar Aiken, quarterback Ryan Mallett and offensive lineman Nick McDonald earned the honor this week. The six players are a season high.
