Despite the fact that he's under contract for 2013, Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin has already been a topic of Patriots-based discussion this offseason. That's because ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter recently said that Boldin could be a cap casualty for the Ravens, who are tight on cap space and positioning themselves to secure a new contract for quarterback Joe Flacco, among others.
We pondered the possibility of Boldin as a Patriot earlier this week, although recent comments from the veteran receiver on Pro Football Talk suggest that scenario may not be very likely.
"I won’t play in another uniform," Boldin said. “We have a saying, once a Raven, always a Raven, and I’ll always be a Raven.”
While there is mutual interest between both Boldin and the Ravens to keep him going forward, the decision will have to be considered from a dollars-and-cents perspective. He was outstanding in the playoffs, but with a $6 million salary for 2013 and key free agents to attend to, a difficult decision may have to be made by Baltimore.
The Patriots, of course, have key decisions to make at the wide receiver position this offseason, but a player like Boldin would fit the mold of a tough, dependable, physical receiver who could give the team a boost, particularly in the red zone.
