Cleaning out the football notebook

Some leftover thoughts after the long weekend:

1. The trial for Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard is scheduled to continue today, with the case expected to go to the jury following closing arguments. The Omaha World Herald has kept us posted on all the details. We’ll be watching closely.

2. Former Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli has signed on to provide analysis for NFL Network at the combine, as has former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. If those two are on the set together, I’m interested to see the dynamics between them.

3. ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay included Boston College defensive tackle Kaleb Ramsey on his list of “snubs” – those not invited to the combine. Here are the nine players from New England colleges who have been invited.

4. As we prepare for the combine this week – the ESPNBoston team is scheduled to arrive in Indianapolis on Wednesday evening – it’s always good to remember that approximately 10 percent of the players drafted every year weren’t invited to the combine. Two of them, receiver Wes Welker and right tackle Sebastian Vollmer, are among the Patriots’ top free agents this offseason.
