The Patriots claimed running back Akeem Shavers, released by Tampa Bay on Monday, off of waivers on Tuesday.
Shavers was signed by the Buccaneers as a college free agent following the draft. He was not invited to the combine, but impressed at the Purdue pro day with a reported 40 time of 4.35 and a nearly 40-inch vertical jump.
The 5-foot-10 200 pound back finished the 2012 season with 871 yards on 181 attempts and scored six touchdowns.
Quentin Hines, who was also an undrafted free agent, was waived/injured by the Patriots on Monday and went unclaimed on waivers, meaning he reverts to injured reserve and does not count towards the Patriots 90-man roster count. He was on the field for the start of the first and second days of rookie minicamp, meaning the injury likely took place sometime after the final media accessibility.
The Patriots now have 88 players on their active roster.
