The Patriots and free-agent receiver Lavelle Hawkins, formerly of the Tennessee Titans, have agreed to a two-year contract, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean.
Hawkins (5-11, 194) entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft choice out of Cal in 2008 and has totaled 71 receptions in 52 career games, all with the Titans. Known in part for his speed, he also has experience as a kickoff returner, with a career-long 71-yard return last season.
The 26-year-old was slowed by an ankle injury and limited to just five catches in seven games last season. In 2011, he had a career-high 47 receptions for 470 yards and one touchdown.
Hawkins was released by the Titans last week, and now joins a revamped receiver position in New England where he is no certainty for a roster spot. His contributions on special teams figure to play a significant role in his chances for a spot.
