Holmes, 24, was added to the practice squad in January. He was a long shot to make the 53-man roster this season, and by waiving him now, the Patriots give him a chance to hook on with another team for organized team activities.
After drafting two receivers last month, the Patriots have shuffled their personnel at the position in recent weeks, signing veteran Lavelle Hawkins and releasing 2012 seventh-round pick Jeremy Ebert.
Holmes' release leaves the Patriots with 88 players (including 11 wide receivers) on their 90-man offseason roster.
