The Patriots signed free-agent linebacker A.J. Edds on Thusday, the team announced.
Edds (6-4, 256) spent the early part of the 2011 season on the Patriots' 53-man roster (2 games) and practice squad. He was signed off the Patriots' practice squad by the Colts and played in nine games for Indianapolis in 2011.
Overall, he's battled injuries in his brief NFL career, spending his 2010 rookie season on injured reserve (knee) as well as the 2012 season on injured reserve (knee). Having played in college at Iowa, he had entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft choice of the Dolphins in 2010.
Edds currently appears to be a longer shot for a roster spot. His contributions on special teams will likely be a big factor in his chances.
The Patriots now have 89 of the 90 spots on their roster filled.
