Belichick backs kicker Gostkowski

8/17/2013

Kicker Stephen Gostkowski has missed three field goals in the first two preseason games – from 44, 53 and 50 yards – but coach Bill Belichick doesn’t seem concerned.

Asked about Gostkowski in his standard day-after-game conference call, Belichick put his support behind the eight-year veteran who is the lone kicker in camp.

“I think he’s had a good camp, he’s worked really hard, he’s in good condition, he’s kicked the ball well – he’s been hitting the ball very solidly consistently,” Belichick said. “I know that he’ll continue to work hard to do everything he can, and so will the other people involved in the operation, snapping and holding, however that turns out.

“I have confidence that he’s one of the best kickers in the league.”

Prior to answering specifically on Gostkowski, Belichick focused more on the overall field goal operation – snap, hold, kick – which he said “needs to be better.”

“He’s a part of that, but so is the snapper and so is the holder. We’ve had three different snappers and two different holders in camp and in the preseason games,” Belichick said. “You want to have multiple people ready, which means that multiple people will have to work with each other. At some point, we have to settle in to whichever guys it is that we think are going to do most of the work this year at that position.”

Gostkowski has two successful field goal this preseason, a 34-yarder against the Eagles last week and a 39-yarder against the Buccaneers.
