When considering the question, "What type of coach are the Patriots getting in defensive assistant Brendan Daly?" a few newspaper stories start to bring the picture into focus.
"Energy" and "fire" are two words that surfaced, which are similar characteristics of former Patriots assistant Pepper Johnson.
Players discuss coaching style. In a feature story for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Dan Wiederer notes some of Daly's coaching influences and also speaks to Vikings players about Daly. "He's always a big ball of energy out there. He gives us that extra push and that extra incentive to keep working," said tackle Letroy Guion.
Frazier likes the fire. In a notebook for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Wiederer quotes former Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier: "A lot of energy. A lot of enthusiasm. That's contagious."
Connections with O'Shea & McDaniels. Two assistants on the current Patriots staff, receivers coach Chad O'Shea and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, previously worked on a staff with Daly. O'Shea was the Vikings' offensive assistant/receivers coach from 2006-08 at the same time Daly was defensive assistant/defensive line coach. McDaniels was offensive coordinator for the Rams in 2011, when Daly was on the staff as a defensive line coach. It's likely that feedback from O'Shea and McDaniels was solicited by Bill Belichick before making the hire.
