The New England Patriots are hosting free agent defensive end/outside linebacker Matt Shaughnessy on Wednesday.

Originally a 2009 third-round pick of the Oakland Raiders, Shaughnessy spent the 2013 season with the Arizona Cardinals, recording 36 tackles and three sacks in 16 games played, including 12 starts.

At 6-5 and 285 pounds, Shaughnessy brings size and some pass rush to the table, as well as positional versatility. He had seven sacks during the 2010 season, his second in the NFL.

He has local ties to the area as a Norwich, Conn., area native and played collegiately at Wisconsin.

He joins linebacker Wesley Woodyard and wide receiver Brandon LaFell as the players in for visits on Wednesday.
Field Yates has previous experience interning with the New England Patriots on both their coaching and scouting staffs. A graduate of Wesleyan University (CT), he is a regular contributor to ESPN Boston's Patriots coverage and ESPN Insider.
