ORLANDO, Fla -- The playing surface at Gillette Stadium, which has been FieldTurf synthetic grass since 2006, is getting an upgrade.

The installation of FieldTurf Revolution and VersaTile has already begun, Gillette Stadium officials announced Monday. The New England Revolution of Major League Soccer also call Gillette Stadium home, and they will be the first to use the new surface, for their next home match on April 12.

The Seattle Seahawks have the same playing surface at CenturyLink Field.

In 2006, when the Patriots' natural grass playing field was struggling to hold up, the team made an in-season switch to FieldTurf. Since then, the Patriots have posted a 60-9 record at home.

The upgrade of turf in 2014 should be noticed by players.

"When we made the decision to install a new turf surface, we underwent an extensive evaluation and testing program of many other turf products in the marketplace," said Jim Nolan, senior vice president of finance, administration and operations. "What we are getting is an elite level turf system that will significantly benefit our players for years to come."
