First-year offensive tackle R.J. Mattes, who was a long shot to make the final roster, has been released by the New England Patriots, the club announced.

The 24-year-old Mattes, of NC State, originally joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2013. He spent most of training camp and the preseason with the team before he was released and brought back to the practice squad on Dec. 30.

The Patriots now have 89 players on their roster, one below the allowed limit. Given their shortage at offensive tackle with starters Nate Solder and Sebastian Vollmer not cleared for full participation, the odds are high that the Patriots will probably be seeking another player at the position.
