Picked-up pieces around the Web

A few picked-up pieces, with a New England Patriots twist, around the Web:

Patriots likely won't see Pouncey in opener. In significant news in South Florida, Dolphins center Mike Pouncey underwent hip surgery and is expected to miss three to four months. The news, first reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, has a trickle-down effect on the Patriots because they open the season on the road against Miami on Sept. 7. Pouncey is one of the Dolphins' best players and now the Dolphins have to consider Plan B for at least the first stretch of the season.

Receiving corps in the middle. In his "Mandatory Monday" offering, Mike Tanier of SportsonEarth.com picks the top five receiving corps, as well as the bottom five, and leads off explaining why the Patriots aren't on the list.

Depth a critical aspect to championship teams. Pat Kirwan of CBSSports.com writes on the importance of depth for championship teams and shares his opinion on the deepest teams in the NFL. The Patriots fall out of the top tier.

Revis and Browner in the No. 2 spot. Count Nate Davis of USAToday.com a believer in the Patriots' revamped secondary. He ranks the Darrelle Revis/Brandon Browner combination as the NFL's second best.
