The New England Patriots waived rookie free-agent wide receivers Jeremy Johnson and Reese Wiggins on Thursday, the team announced. Both were longshots to make the club, as detailed in the "checking the locks" series.
With the two roster moves, coupled with defensive tackle Armond Armstead's retirement on Wednesday, the Patriots now have 87 players on their 90-man roster.
Johnson and Wiggins had plenty of practice time in the spring, in part because the Patriots had several receivers who were limited by injuries, a group including Aaron Dobson, Jeremy Gallon and Brandon LaFell.

The Patriots are likely to sign at least one receiver before the start of training camp to add depth, as nine is a bit lighter than the norm.
