Getting to know TE Daniel Fells
By Mike Reiss
Free-agent tight end Daniel Fells visited with the Patriots on Monday, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
The 26-year-old Fells has been with the St. Louis Rams the last two seasons. He had a career-high 21 catches for 273 yards with three touchdowns in 2009.
Fells, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 272 pounds, was set to become a restricted free agent this offseason. But in what was considered a surprise, the Rams did not tender him, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Fells has been a late bloomer.
He entered the NFL in 2006 with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent out of California-Davis, and he was on the 53-man roster that season but did not appear in a game. Then, in 2007, he spent the entire season on the Oakland Raiders practice squad.
In 2008, he was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad before the Rams signed him to their active roster. His career has been on the uptick since that point -- he flashed in 2009 with a few long touchdown catches -- and he could view New England as an opportunity to finally break through.
The Patriots have a major need at the position, with Robbie Agnone and Rob Myers the only tight ends on the roster. Neither has played in a regular-season NFL game.
