Rookie tight ends top playtime chart

By Mike Reiss

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – One aspect of the Patriots’ preseason opener that coach Bill Belichick liked was the experience gained by some of the team’s younger players. If there was one position on offense that stood out in that area, it was tight end.

Rookies Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski were on the field for more snaps than any other offensive skill-position player.

TE Aaron Hernandez – 57 of 67
TE Rob Gronkowski – 45 of 67
WR Brandon Tate – 29 of 67
QB Brian Hoyer – 26 of 67
WR Taylor Price – 26 of 67
QB Zac Robinson – 24 of 67
WR Darnell Jenkins – 23 of 67
WR Julian Edelman – 22 of 67
RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis – 21 of 67
QB Tom Brady – 17 of 67
RB Chris Taylor – 17 of 67
WR Randy Moss – 16 of 67
TE Alge Crumpler – 15 of 67
WR Sam Aiken – 14 of 67
WR Rod Owens – 14 of 67
RB Laurence Maroney – 12 of 67
RB Thomas Clayton – 7 of 67
RB Sammy Morris – 7 of 67
TE Carson Butler – 5 of 67
RB Kevin Faulk – 3 of 67
FB Thomas Williams – 2 of 67

(Two kneel-downs not included; one spike included; three penalties included.)

QUICK-HIT THOUGHTS: Brady, Moss, Crumpler and the top-unit offensive line did not play after the second series. … Hernandez was the only player who was on the field for at least one play on every drive. … Gronkowski was part of every drive except for the two-minute drill at the end of the first half. … The top receiving trio was Moss, Edelman and Tate, with Aiken the fourth option. … The receiving trio of Price, Owens and Jenkins played the final five series. … Veteran running back Fred Taylor dressed but did not play; he said he was told beforehand that would be the case as the plan is to feature each of the backs at different points of the preseason.
