Defensive snapshot: Meriweather's dip

By Mike Reiss

A look at the snaps played by Patriots defenders in Sunday’s loss to the Jets, while analyzing what it means:

S Patrick Chung – 69 of 69
ILB Jerod Mayo – 69 of 69
CB Devin McCourty – 69 of 69
OLB Tully Banta-Cain – 60 of 69
CB Darius Butler – 60 of 69
DL Vince Wilfork – 59 of 69
S James Sanders – 56 of 69
DE Ron Brace -- 46 of 69
DE Gerard Warren – 43 of 69
OLB Rob Ninkovich – 42 of 69
ILB Brandon Spikes – 40 of 69
S Brandon Meriweather – 27 of 69
DL Myron Pryor – 27 of 69
OLB Jermaine Cunningham – 23 of 69
CB Jonathan Wilhite – 22 of 69
DL Mike Wright – 16 of 69
LB Gary Guyton – 15 of 69
CB Kyle Arrington – 8 of 69
DL Kyle Love – 6 of 69
S Jarrad Page – 2 of 69

(Includes penalties and successful two-point conversion attempt.)

ANALYSIS: CB Darius Butler, who struggled in the game, was pulled for the final series in favor of Kyle Arrington. … While S Brandon Meriweather rotated in to the base 3-4 alignment for one series, he mostly played in sub packages as his playing time was reduced for the second week in a row. … In a sign of how far he has come from his rookie season, DE Ron Brace was just four snaps shy of surpassing his entire total of plays from 2009. … Because stopping the run was a top priority against a heavier, powerful offensive line, Brace and Gerard Warren started and played over Mike Wright, who was used solely in sub packages. … CB Devin McCourty and LB Jerod Mayo played the entire game for the second week in a row.
