Patriots achieve desired balance

By Mike Reiss

The Patriots don't officially have an offensive coordinator, although it's clear that quarterbacks coach Bill O'Brien calls the plays. O'Brien is on a hot streak in the Patriots' three-wins-in-12-days stretch as the offense has struck the desired balance.

Here is the breakdown on the balance:

Steelers: 24 runs/43 passes
Colts: 34 runs/25 passes
Lions: 25 runs/27 passes

3-game totals: 83 runs/95 passes

"Any time you can be balanced and hit some runs in there and force them to defend the running game and the passing game, that opened up a few play-action opportunities for us, too," coach Bill Belichick said after the 45-24 win over the Lions. "We had a couple of good shots on play-action."
