Brady keeps focus on the Bears
By Steven Krasner
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Naturally, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was asked Wednesday for his thoughts about winning the back-to-back player-of-the-week honors, as well as whether he thinks he’s a candidate for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award.
And, just as naturally, Brady shrugged it all off.
His answer? He elected to look ahead to Sunday’s game in Chicago.
“I think the Chicago Bears are a very good team,” said Brady in response to a question about his MVP candidacy. “We’ve got play very well. I’m excited about the challenge. It’s a short week. We have to prepare well. We’re a few days behind them in preparation.
“Regardless of how I play, it’s how our offense plays. We’ve still got some work to do. Guys have to get better play by play. We’re still working for more consistency from all of us, myself, Wes [Welker], Deion [Branch], all of us. The games only get bigger from here. I’m not thinking about (awards),” said Brady.
Brady said he was thinking about the challenge of facing the Bears, who are leading the NFC North at 9-3, having won five in a row.
“We just have to get back to work today, put in the work we need to be prepared,” he said. “Then we have to have a good day tomorrow and a good day on Friday. This is a whole different game, a different defense. We haven’t played this team for a while. They have a good defense and they play well at home. We’ll have to go out there and play well.
In his brief remarks, lasting maybe six minutes before he cut off the interview, Brady said this is no time to be resting on any laurels.
“It’s only been 12 weeks. It’s not like this is the last game of the season. We haven’t accomplished anything. It was a good win Monday night but that doesn’t do anything for us this week. We have to put in some good preparation,” he said.
This will not be the first time Brady has played in Chicago for the Patriots. He played against the Bears in 2002, but the game was played in Champaign, on the campus of the University of Illinois because Soldier Field was being renovated.
“We were down 11 with four minutes to go and we came back and beat them. That was nice,” said Brady.
Brady now has played in most stadiums in the NFL. One he hasn’t is the new stadium in Dallas, which happens to be the site of the Super Bowl. And it’s no giant leap of faith to think the Patriots (10-2) may wind up playing in the big game.
Is Brady thinking of checking that new stadium off his personal list?
“That’s so far away,” said Brady. “I don’t think about that. Soldier Field, that’s what I’m concerned with.”
