One view of a draft value chart
By Mike Reiss
Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly produces a "draft value chart" that nicely breaks down where some of the prospects in this year's class are projected to be drafted. Nawrocki notes that the board is based on considerable feedback from NFL teams and projects the league value of players.
A few items of note from a Patriots and New England perspective:
1. Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich shows up in the late sixth-round category.
2. Eight defensive ends, three of whom project to outside linebacker in the Patriots scheme, are slotted in the first round. Five defensive tackles are slotted in the first round, which highlights the depth of the d-line in this draft.
3. Three quarterbacks are slotted in the first round, two in the top part of the round (Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert) and one in the middle of the round (Jake Locker). If all three are off the board by the Patriots' 17th pick, it could push a talented player at a position of need down to them.
4. Mark Ingram is the lone running back in the first-round category and he's slotted in the middle of the round.
