Mock thoughts: Taylor-made?
By Mike Reiss
Adam Caplan of Foxsports.com produces his first mock draft and he envisions a scenario in which the Patriots bulk up on the line of scrimmage, with Boston College offensive lineman Anthony Castonzo the pick at No. 17, and Baylor nose tackle Phil Taylor at No. 28.
The Taylor pick is a bit of an outside-the-box thought that hasn't been duplicated by other analysts.
"You won’t find many athletic defensive linemen of his size, so Taylor would be hard for the Patriots to pass up here," Caplan writes. "They badly need depth at defensive end. Brooks Reed, who would fill a pass-rushing need, is also a consideration."
ANALYSIS:Taylor is viewed as one of the draft's top nose tackles. If this scenario unfolded, he could potentially learn behind Vince Wilfork in the 3-4 alignment, and when ready to contribute, could line up at nose with Wilfork kicking out to end. Wilfork's versatility gives the Patriots some flexibility for a possibility like this, although it's hard to imagine the Patriots would want to move Wilfork permanently because he's at his best lined up over the center. So if going this route, the Patriots would probably envision Taylor having the flexibility to contribute at end as well.
