Mayo drafted 7th in '08 re-do

By Mike Rodak

It is often said that it takes at least three years for a draft to be properly evaluated. With the third anniversary of the 2008 NFL Draft rapidly approaching, NFL.com's Pat Kirwan recently took a look back in his latest draft "do-over."

With the seventh selection in the first round -- which New Orleans acquired in a draft-day trade from the Patriots -- Kirwan has the Saints 'selecting' Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo.

"Mayo already has 285 tackles in three years," Kirwan writes. "And the Saints have been looking for a linebacker since Scott Fujita left."

In the trade with the Saints, the Patriots picked up a 2008 third-round pick (OLB Shawn Crable) in order for the Saints to move up three spots.

While Crable did not pan out as the extra asset the Patriots acquired in the deal, it still demonstrated the Patriots' ability to move down in the draft and get similar value from a lower selection.

With Mayo off the board by the time the Patriots 'selected' at the tenth overall pick, Kirwan taps Falcons linebacker Curtis Lofton, noting that "there would be no drop-off for the Patriots" from Mayo.
