McCourty 8th in corner power rankings

By Mike Reiss

Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty, who turned in a Pro Bowl rookie season and was named second-team Associated Press All-Pro, is eighth in ESPN.com's cornerback power rankings.

McCourty received as high as a fifth-place vote (from ESPN.com AFC East reporter Tim Graham), and was left off one ballot (ESPN.com NFC South reporter Pat Yasinskas). He received one eighth-place vote, three ninth-place votes and two 10th-place votes.

The results didn't sit well with Graham.

"I've taken into account not only last year's production, but also how I perceive players entering the 2011 season," Graham writes. "With that in mind, I can't fathom how New England Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty didn't get more respect from our panel when rating the NFL's best at his position."

The results provide a springboard to revisit where we were at this time last year.

When the Patriots traded down twice and then selected McCourty, many roared that it was a terrible decision (read some of the comments in this article). Now the debate is why he isn't ranked higher than eighth.
