Draft from a reporter's perspective
By Mike Reiss
One of the common questions on a day like today is: "Where do you cover the draft from?"
While the picks are announced in New York at Radio City Music Hall, the Patriots' operation is based at Gillette Stadium. The team will communicate its trades/picks to "runners" at Radio City Music Hall -- they deliver the official selection -- but all the behind-the-scenes action in the draft room takes place in Foxborough.
So for most reporters focusing solely on the Patriots, headquarters tonight, tomorrow and Saturday will be in the press box.
After the Patriots select a player, the team usually arranges a conference call in the back of the press box. A bunch of reporters gather around a speakerphone and it's our first introduction to the newest member of the team.
By the end of the night, Bill Belichick is scheduled to come to the interview podium for a news conference.
As for tonight, an announcement on the Patriots' No. 17 pick -- assuming there isn't a trade up -- is scheduled around 9:35 p.m. ET, according to the team. The No. 28 pick is scheduled to be made around 11 p.m. ET.
