Rapid reaction: Markell Carter

By Mike Reiss

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The Patriots selected Central Arkansas defensive end/outside linebacker Markell Carter in the sixth round (194th overall), giving them a developmental pass-rush prospect to work with. Carter is just the second defender picked by the Patriots to this point of the draft, joining cornerback Ras-I Dowling (second round, No. 33).

Carter measures 6-foot-3 7/8 and 252 pounds -- which are considered solid in the Patriots' prototype -- and totaled 12 sacks over the last two seasons. He projects to outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense and rush end in a four-man line sub package.

Carter, who runs well but will need to improve his strength based on his 17 reps in the bench press, comes from the same FCS school that produced Titans defensive lineman Jacob Ford.  This piece from the Examiner-Enterprise in Bartlesville, Oklahoma tells more about Carter, who is an under-the-radar prospect with an impressive vertical.

Last year's sixth-round pick, center Ted Larsen, didn't make the club but went on to start for the Buccaneers.
