Patriots work out RB Clinton Portis

By Mike Reiss

The Patriots worked out free agent running back Clinton Portis, a league source confirmed.

The 29-year-old Portis has played with the Broncos (2002-2003) and Redskins (2004-2010), totaling 9,923 yards on 2,230 carries (4.4 avg.) and 75 touchdowns. Portis (5-11, 219) played in just five games last season, his 227 yards the lowest total of his career.

The workout is likely tied to the Patriots keeping their emergency lists updated.

The Patriots have BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Danny Woodhead and rookies Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen atop their depth chart. All figure to make the final roster, unless Vereen's injured hamstring turns out to be more serious than anticipated. Veterans Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk could also be in the mix if the team keeps more than four on the active roster.

Portis' workout was not a reaction to Woodhead not finishing Thursday's game in Tampa, as it had been arranged in advance.

Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald first reported the workout.
