Patriots practice 21: Observations
By Mike Rodak
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Observations from Saturday's walkthrough practice, the Patriots' 21st and final of training camp, which was held in helmets but no pads and in sunny conditions:
Haynesworth makes an appearance. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who has not practiced since Aug. 4, was on the field in uniform and a baseball cap, but not with a helmet for the session. Haynesworth stood off to the side as other defensive players took part in a slow-paced walkthrough. After practice, Haynesworth was seen talking to owner Robert Kraft on the sideline as other players went through their stretching and jogging routine.
Ellis, Edelman, Tate, Sanders return. Defensive lineman Shaun Ellis, who had been on the active/physically unable to perform list since signing with the team on Aug. 7, was in uniform and a helmet for the walkthrough, but like Haynesworth, spent most of the time watching his teammates. Unlike Haynesworth, though, Ellis did take part in the end-of-practice stretching and jogging.
Meanwhile, wide receivers Brandon Tate and Julian Edelman both returned to practice; Tate had not been in uniform since Aug. 4, while Edelman had been out since Aug. 13. Both took part in special teams drills as returners, which made up the bulk of the hour-long walkthrough. Safety James Sanders, who had practiced only three times in camp, was in uniform and also took part in the special teams drills.
Bodden, Butler, Fletcher, Woodhead among missing. Cornerbacks Leigh Bodden and Darius Butler were not spotted at the walkthrough after both having played in Thursday’s preseason game in Tampa without having suffered any noticeable injuries. Also not seen, and having played in Thursday’s game, was rookie tight end Lee Smith. In addition, linebacker Dane Fletcher (thumb), running back Danny Woodhead, and safety Bret Lockett (thigh) were all not seen at Saturday’s practice; all left Thursday’s game with injuries.
Running back Kevin Faulk (active/PUP) and cornerback Ras-I Dowling both watched the walkthrough practice out-of-uniform from the sidelines.
Spikes, Wright, Cunningham, Price remain out. Other players not seen on Saturday, who also did not practice earlier in the week, were running backs Shane Vereen and Eric Kettani; wide receiver Taylor Price; offensive linemen Marcus Cannon (active/NFI) and Ryan Wendell; defensive linemen Mike Wright, Ron Brace (active/PUP), Jermaine Cunningham, and Brandon Deaderick (active/PUP); linebacker/safety Josh Barrett; linebackers Brandon Spikes and Jeff Tarpinian; and cornerback Malcolm Williams.
