Brandon Meriweather in Chicago

By Mike Reiss

Former Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather was a big story in Chicago today, as he joined the Bears after signing a one-year deal.

Here are a few stories from ESPNChicago.com:

1. "Meriweather studies schemes" -- Bears reporter Michael C. Wright writes on how Meriweather decided not to look back at his Patriots tenure, but only ahead to to his time with the Bears. Bears coach Lovie Smith on Meriweather: "He's just a good football player. He can hit. He's got excellent ball skills, change of direction, all of the things we're looking for in a defensive back. He's got a good pedigree, too. We did our research and felt like he's a fit here. We'll see how it goes this game week."

2. "Bears' newest safety a low-risk addition" -- Columnist Melissa Isaacson writes on how Meriweather is a low-risk, high-reward type of move for the Bears. "This one is a no-brainer and deserves kudos," Isaacson writes. "Sure, there's always skepticism when any player is waived, especially by one of the better teams in the league at evaluating talent. But Meriweather, 27, gives the secondary a bona fide talent in his prime and some much-needed depth at safety."
